The Gold Coast is a region south of Brisbane on Australia’s east coast. Popular with holiday makers from Australia and internationally due to its long sandy beaches, surfing spots, inland canals and waterways. With a wealth of accommodation options from units and top class hotels it has also become the place for conferences. Great weather and internationally branded theme parks such as Dreamworld, Sea World and Wet’n’Wild attracts families.
Gold Coast History
The Gold Coast is the ancestral home of a number of Indigenous clans of the Yugambeh people. Europeans arrived in 1823 when explorer John Oxley landed at Mermaid Beach attracted by the Red Cedar.
A number of towns developed along the coast and Hinterland. Nerang was surveyed and established as a base for the industry around 1870. By 1873, the town reserve of Burleigh Heads had also been surveyed and land sales commenced. This was followed by Southport that quickly grew a reputation as a holiday destination for well off Brisbane residents. The Gold Coast region grew significantly with the establishment of the Surfers Paradise Hotel in the late 1920s.
Originally known as the South Coast, over-inflated real estate prices led to the nickname of “Gold Coast” from 1950. The “Gold Coast” became a convenient way to refer to the holiday strip from Southport to Coolangatta.
In 2007, the Gold Coast become the sixth largest city in Australia and the largest non-capital city.
